How to find the listings and links the Google Maps top 3 have, and get them

Short answer: open the Leader X-ray in your workspace and click Check listings and links. Pack Leader finds the 3 businesses that lead Google Maps for your keyword near you, then lists every directory they are on where we did not find you, and every website that links to them and not to you. #1's listings and links come first. Each row has a button: Get it for a listing, Ask us for this link for a link. The listings check uses 100 credits and the links check 25 credits.

The Leader X-ray shows why #1 leads, signal by signal. This article covers its first block, What #1 has that you don't: the listings and links you can add.

Who the top 3 are

  • The keyword: your business's main keyword, the first keyword of your audit. You can switch it.
  • The search point: your business's center if you set one for town scans, otherwise your address.
  • The top 3: the first 3 Google Maps results for that keyword at that point, not counting you. #1 leads.
  • Saved competitors: the competitors in your Brand identity appear as extra columns in the X-ray profile table, not in the gap check. The gap tables show #1, #2 and #3.

Run the gap check

  1. Open the Leader X-ray. It is the first screen of your workspace.
  2. In What #1 has that you don't, click Check listings and links. The note next to the button shows the credits both checks use, and one click starts both.
  3. Wait for both checks to finish. They run in the background, each with its own credits: listings 100, links 25. The listings check takes 1 to 4 minutes, the links check about 1 minute.

A result is valid for 30 days. After that, the block still shows it, with its date and a Check again button. The Leader X-ray never starts a paid check by itself.

Listings the top 3 have

You get one row per directory where at least one of the top 3 is listed and we did not find you.

  • Columns: the directory, a check mark for each of #1, #2 and #3, and a link to each listing found, so you can see it yourself.
  • We did not find you here. Each row says so, with a Check link that runs the same search on Google, so you can look for your own listing.
  • Order: directories #1 is on come first, then directories more of the top 3 are on, then Pack Leader's usual directory order.

Pack Leader finds listings by searching each directory's site for the business name, as in the citation gap check. For you, it searches your Google name without the city and state in it, with your trade words kept, so a Google name such as "Example Plumbing Co. Anytown" is searched without "Anytown". Before one of the 9 major directories (Yelp, BBB, Facebook, Nextdoor, Foursquare, Yellow Pages, LinkedIn, MapQuest and Superpages) counts as a gap, it looks again: your name again, with your state. This is part of the 100 credits.

A check never says you are not listed, only that we did not find you. Search can still miss a listing that is spelled differently, so click Check before you create one you might already have.

We may have found you

Sometimes our search finds a listing whose title has your exact business name, but nothing on it confirms it is you: no city, state or phone. Those directories are listed under the table, in We may have found you on {n} directories. Each row says We may have found you: check this listing, with a link to the listing.

  • They are not counted as gaps, and they are not in the sentence at the top or in Get all. When no counted gap is left, Get all is hidden.
  • Open the listing. If it is yours, click I'm already listed. If it isn't, click Get it.
  • Like a mark, it never counts as a closed gap in your Overtake plan until a check confirms you.

I'm already listed

If you are on a directory in the list, click I'm already listed on its row. It is free, and you see "Hidden. We look for you there again on the next gap check."

  • The row leaves the list, the counts and the sentence at the top at once, for 90 days. It moves to a list under the rows: {k} hidden because you said you're listed.
  • The next gap check looks for you again. If it finds you, the directory is no longer a gap and leaves the hidden list. If it still doesn't, the row stays hidden and says "We still did not find you here."
  • After 90 days, a row that was never confirmed comes back to the list, with "We still did not find you here."
  • Clicked it by mistake? In the hidden list, click Not listed after all to put the row back.
  • Your Overtake plan keeps counting the listing until a check finds you. A mark never closes a gap.

You get one row per website that links to at least one of the top 3 and not to you, after the usual filters of the backlink gap check (low-quality sites removed, every site rated by value).

  • Columns: the website, a check mark for each of #1, #2 and #3, its Value (High marks a high-value site), and the date the link was First seen.
  • Order: sites that link to #1 come first, then sites that link to more of the top 3, then high value first, then by the site's rank.

These are the links the top 3 on Google Maps have. Pack Leader doesn't say a site is local: no data says that.

Get them

Where Button What happens
A listing row Get it Opens Done for you citations with that directory picked. The other directories in your gap stay picked too
Above the listings Get all {n} listings the top 3 have Opens the smallest package that covers them: 15, 35 or 60 listings. Above 60, it picks the 60 package and tells you how many are left for a second order
A link row Ask us for this link Adds the site to your request and opens a quote with that site named. We pitch that site first. If it says no, we find a site like it
Above the links Ask us for the links #1 has A quote with up to 10 sites that link to #1, high value first

Listings are sold in packages, not one by one: under the table, Listings come in packs, from $89.00. Packages are one-time and are delivered in 14 to 30 days, with a report of every live listing. Links are quoted for each order. You can also add any listing or link yourself; the row shows what to get.

The sentence at the top

Above the rows, one sentence says where to start. For example, for a sample business:

  • "Example Plumbing Co. is on 14 directories where we did not find you, and 23 sites link to them but not to you. Get the listings first."
  • "You are listed where the top 3 are, and no site links to them that skips you. Your gap is in the profile below."

Listings come first when you have both gaps, because they have a fixed price and a set delivery time. When you have neither, the Leader X-ray profile table shows where #1 is ahead.

Each check uses credits from your balance. See how credits work.

Frequently asked questions

Why are these competitors different from the ones in Brand identity?

The gap check compares you with the businesses that hold the Google Maps top 3 for your keyword today, at your search point. Competitors you saved in Brand identity appear as extra columns in the X-ray profile table, not in the gap check.

Does Get it place an order?

No. It opens Done for you citations with that directory picked. You choose the package and pay there.

Can Pack Leader promise a link from a given site?

No. We pitch the site you asked for first. If it says no, we find a site like it. That is why link rows say Ask us, not Get it.

What if I'm already listed on a directory in the list?

Click I'm already listed on that row. It is free. The row leaves your counts and the sentence at once, for 90 days. The next gap check looks again: if it finds you, the directory is no longer a gap. If it still doesn't, the row stays hidden, says we still did not find you, and comes back after 90 days. To undo a mark, open the hidden list and click Not listed after all. A mark never counts as a closed gap in your Overtake plan.

How long is a gap check valid?

30 days. After that, Pack Leader still shows the result with its date, and a Check again button. Each check uses credits.

What if the top 3 change?

The top 3 are read again on every Leader X-ray. Run Check again to compare yourself with the new top 3.
